From 1 January to 30 June 2022, France will hold the presidency of the Council of the European Union.
During this presidency, the French government aims to contribute to a more united, more sovereign Europe. It also aims to ensure that Europe “exploits the full potential of the economic recovery and of the ecological and digital transition”.
Industrial property plays an important role in the emergence of the world-class economic champions that will help secure the financial and technological independence of the European Union and its Member States. Industrial property protection is one of the key components of any innovation strategy. It enables users to secure their inventions and creations by providing them with monopoly rights.
In light of France’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the French Patent and Trademark Office (INPI) is organizing a conference on the industrial property challenges associated with the economic recovery.
The conference is structured around four themes.
The unitary patent and the Unified Patent Court
Businesses, of all sizes, are an invaluable source of economic growth and recovery. They will soon be able to benefit from the implementation of the unitary patent and the Unified Patent Court, which will create a single European market for technologies by providing standardized protection at a lower cost across all contracting Member States, as well as increased legal certainty. The discussion will centre around the status of the new system and its benefits.
Sovereignty and SMEs
This discussion will focus on the growth and vitality of European businesses and how these can be stimulated by industrial property, and more particularly by a framework and tools that are adapted to their needs and to market developments, notably at the international level.
Artisanal and industrial geographical indications
In addition to innovation, protecting existing know-how is also recognized as a key growth driver. In response to the European Commission’s legislative initiative to introduce EU-wide protection, part of the conference will be dedicated to discussing non-agricultural geographical indications.
In light of the anti-counterfeiting reform bill currently being discussed in the French Parliament, we will talk about the need to adapt anti-counterfeiting mechanisms to ensure they can be activated easily and in a timeframe compatible with business life.
